The catalogers at
Library
Conversions Limited Company created the marc4media®
system for cataloging educational media. When we first began cataloging
educational resource collections, there were very few MARC records available for
media products. The Library of Congress had discontinued their
comprehensive services for non-print materials, MARC formats for
non-print had gone through a major revision and existing records for
media resources were of inconsistent and generally poor quality.
In 1993 we made a commitment to a long-term plan to provide MARC record
services for non-print materials and to include in this cataloging,
curriculum data elements that had recently been approved by MARBI, the
Machine-Readable Bibliographic Information Committee of the Library of
Congress. As far as we know, we were the only company at the time, to
make this kind of a commitment and we remain, the only company today
whose sole purpose is to catalog media resources for the educational
community.
