SAMPLES OF

Predictable information in predictable locations, that’s the essence of a MARC record. The difference in marc4media® is that the content of each record focuses solely on aligning media to educational objectives and learning outcomes. In a marc4media® record, ‘Notes’ describe the purpose of an educational series or the content of teacher guides. ‘Summaries’ are written in consideration of alignment to state objectives. ‘Subjects’ include teaching areas such as Social Studies or Language Arts. Additionally, each marc4media® record is so detailed that it satisfies the most intuitive searcher with a broad range of keywords to further countless side searches into related topics and research activities.

We have chosen several ways for you to see the difference marc4media® makes:

IN A DATA STREAM provides a snapshot of a marc4media® record before it is displayed in an automation system. Since MARC is a communications format, symbols and codes define where one record ends and the next one begins and the location of titles, annotations, subjects etc. In their pure form, all marc4media® records look like this, because each is formatted to provide content to all automation systems that use MARC records.

SAMPLE PRINTOUTS emphasizes the characteristic content of marc4media® records for all grade levels. These samples are a hybrid of pure and partly decoded MARC format. Verbal clues to the left of each column show the location of title, series title, annotation etc. Numerical indicators also define the location of types of information. For example, titles are always in 245, summaries are always in 520, series and teacher’s guides are described in the 500’s, series titles are in 440 and subject headings are in the 600’s.

AUTOMATION SYSTEMS shows screen shots of marc4media® in a variety of library management systems. In most of these, distinguishing MARC features that were prominent in the Data Stream and Sample Printouts, are suppressed in the on-line system. MARC has done its job and transported the content to the on-line display.

To fully appreciate the contribution of marc4media®, imagine an on-line display with very little content, perhaps titles and one or two subjects only. Then imagine an on-line catalog built from thousands of marc4media® records. The potential for curriculum development and teachers choosing media aligned to standards, has expanded enormously.
